Billy Goshen is a semi-professional driver who competed in the Star Mazda Championship for two seasons between 2008 and 2009, accumulating 19 starts with a single podium finish and an average grid position of P10.3. His Racer Rating of 3,927 places him in the semi-professional band, describing drivers who win in pro-am and one-make classes and run mid-pack among full professionals. Goshen's record sat him in the middle of a competitive single-seater field; he finished ahead of semi-professional and professional rivals regularly enough to beat drivers rated above him, including Conor Daly, the 2010 Star Mazda champion, twice in their 19 shared races, and FIA Bronze-graded Peter Dempsey on three occasions. However, he was consistently outpaced by the stronger drivers in the series, notably finishing behind Dempsey in 16 of their meetings and behind Alex Ardoin in 13 of 19.[1]
Goshen's results against the field suggest he was competitive in mid-pack but lacked the consistency or pace to move forward. His single podium came during a two-year stretch in which he never won a race, and by his second season in 2009 his form deteriorated; he finished P18 across seven rounds in his final year of racing. He raced for Goshen Motorsports, a team that accumulated no race wins across its entire record and for which he was its highest-rated driver on the index. His career ended after 2009 and he is now retired from competitive racing.
