Schmidt's indexed racing career consists of a single season in 2012, when he started 15 rounds and finished 11th in the championship standings with one win and one podium finish.[2]
His regular opponents in Star Mazda included established professionals with significantly broader careers. He finished ahead of Ryan Tveter, who would go on to race in FIA Formula 3 European and GP3 Series, on seven occasions. He also beat Connor De Phillippi twice; De Phillippi later became an FIA Gold driver and champion of both GT World Challenge America Pro and IMSA WeatherTech GTDPRO. Against Gustavo Menezes, who raced Formula 3 European and the World Endurance Championship and became LMP2 champion in 2016, Schmidt was closely matched through their head-to-head meetings in the series.
