However, Stone struggled against John Dean and Nathanial Sparks, the 2016 Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup champion, finishing behind both drivers in the majority of their head-to-head meetings. His mid-field consistency within the one-make series was offset by an inability to convert that consistency into victories, and his career concluded after the 2016 season.[2]
