Giovanni Bonanno is a retired Italian professional racing driver whose career on record spans three seasons in International Formula 3000 between 1990 and 1992. He raced for Piquet Racing, a small operation that fielded him across six rounds during that period.[1]
Bonanno made 16 starts in International Formula 3000, a single-class open-wheel championship that mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with graded professionals. He finished 22nd in the championship standings in 1992, his final season in the series. His best results came against established competitors; he finished ahead of Allan McNish, later an International Formula 3000 regular and Formula 1 driver, on at least one occasion, and beat Michael Bartels, who would go on to win three FIA GT Championships, twice in wheel-to-wheel racing.[2]
Among his regular opponents in the series were Andrea Montermini and Jean-Marc Gounon, both professionals who went on to race in Formula 1 and GT racing. Bonanno typically finished behind Montermini, who had a longer career in single-seaters, but proved closely matched with Gounon across their meetings. Before his International Formula 3000 campaign, Bonanno raced in Italian Formula 3, where he scored multiple podiums and finished third in the European Championship in a field that included future world champions Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen.
