Jo Gartner was an established professional racing single-seaters in Formula 1 and Formula 3 Macau, competing in 1984 and 1985. He drove for Osella in his eight Formula 1 starts during the 1984 season, a team fielding a full roster of drivers but without race wins in the index.[1]
Gartner's Formula 1 campaign in 1984 yielded no championship points across eight rounds; he finished seventeenth in the final standings. He raced Formula 3 Macau twice more in 1985, where he met the same calibre of mixed professional and semi-professional fields. Against his most frequent opponents he usually finished behind established professional René Arnoux and elite champion Alain Prost, both regulars in the same races. He did finish ahead of Gerhard Berger, another established professional with over two hundred Formula 1 starts to his name, and Thierry Boutsen, a fellow established professional, on single occasions.[2]
