Élie Bayol was a French driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1952 and 1956, recording seven starts for Gordini without securing a podium finish. His racing career also encompassed sports car competition, most notably a class victory and Index of Performance win in the 750cc category at the 1954 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he drove a Deutsch Bonnet DB-Panhard for the works team. This dual focus on single-seater and endurance racing was typical of drivers in the early 1950s, when the distinction between series remained fluid.[1]
Bayol's Formula 1 results placed him in competitive but not elite company. He finished ahead of several drivers who achieved stronger career trajectories, including Harry Schell, Toulo de Graffenried, Prince Bira and Cesare Perdisa, each of whom holds a Racer Rating between 4,877 and 4,981. However, these were isolated instances rather than consistent patterns of outperformance, and his average finishing position of 5.5 across classified starts reflects modest competitiveness in a field where Gordini itself remained winless across all its entries in the database. Bayol retired from racing after 1956.[2]
