🇮🇹 Giorgio Scarlatti

Giorgio Scarlatti was an established professional racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1956 and 1961. He drove for Maserati in eight of his twelve starts in the championship, which fielded drivers across the range from amateurs to elite professionals in the same grid.[1]

Scarlatti made his Formula 1 debut in May 1956 and raced across six seasons. His total of twelve starts and a 12th-place finish in the 1961 championship standings comprised the whole of his indexed single-seater record. He finished ahead of Jack Brabham once, a three-time Formula 1 world champion, and beat Mike Hawthorn, the 1958 world champion, in their single meeting. Against the drivers he raced most often, he usually finished behind Stirling Moss and Brabham; both were established professionals with far more extensive Formula 1 careers.[2]

Scarlatti's Maserati team was an established outfit that fielded a broad grid; among its 86 drivers across the index was Juan Fangio, an elite professional and multiple champion. Scarlatti sat toward the lower end of a field that ranged from his level down to semi-professional and amateur entrants, making occasional appearances against drivers of greater experience and resource.
