🇮🇹 Giorgio Scarlatti

Giorgio Scarlatti was an Italian racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1956 and 1961, accruing 12 starts without recording a win or podium finish. He drove for the De Tomaso-Osca team throughout his brief championship career. His Racer Rating of 6,829 places him among elite professionals; this is the level of drivers who win races at the very top and who regularly compete alongside world champions, though Scarlatti himself did not reach the podium in the premier series.[1]

The calibre of Scarlatti's competition underscores how narrow the margin was between the top and those on the periphery of 1950s Formula 1. He raced repeatedly against Juan Fangio, a five-time world champion and a generational talent; Stirling Moss, an elite professional who won at the highest level; and Jack Brabham, a three-time champion. In these encounters Scarlatti finished behind all three consistently. However, he proved capable of beating strong drivers on occasion; he outfinished Mike Hawthorn, the 1958 world champion, Luigi Musso, and Brabham himself in individual races, and twice bested Carel Godin de Beaufort. His average finishing position of P8.2 across classified starts reflects a driver who was competitive enough to stay in the field but found himself outpaced by the leading order. Most of his racing came for Maserati, a team that had fielded Fangio and achieved multiple race wins across its history. Scarlatti's career spanned six seasons and ended in 1961 without another major racing programme beyond Formula 1 on record.[2]
