John Brownson holds a Racer Rating of 3,306, placing him in the semi-professional band; this is the level of drivers who win in pro-am and one-make classes and run mid-pack among full professionals, though Brownson's record shows he competed at the back of a professional field rather than among its middle reaches. His sole season of racing came in 2003, when he made four starts in the Star Mazda Championship, a formula-car series that fielded several drivers of genuine professional calibre. He failed to score a podium finish across those four races, averaging a grid position of P24.3 and ending the season classified in twenty-seventh place.[1]

Brownson's competitive record against his regular rivals tellingly shows he finished behind every driver in his core group of rivals across all shared races; he lost all four head-to-heads to Michael McDowell, a Gold-graded professional and the 2004 Star Mazda champion, as well as to Luis Schiavo, who won the 2003 title Brownson was racing in. He also ran behind Moses Smith, the 2002 Star Mazda champion, and Ryan Justice, James Goughary, and Jamie Bach in every shared race. His only competitive notes come from isolated races where he beat drivers such as Kyle Kelley, Brian Theines, Tom Nastasi, and Matt Downs; these were single results rather than patterns of competitiveness. After his single season in 2003, Brownson did not continue racing.
