Moses Smith is a professional racing driver competing in single-seater open-wheel racing. His primary indexed racing was in the Star Mazda Championship, where he drove for American Speed Factory from 2002 to 2004, competing in a national single-class field that mixed amateur and professional entrants. He remains active in SCCA club racing in the FA class, winged Formula Atlantic cars, across both national and regional series.[1]
Smith won the Star Mazda Championship in 2002 during his first season in the series. Over three seasons in the championship, he took six wins and twelve podiums from 26 starts and finished sixth in the points in 2004, his final year at that level. His SCCA club racing record since 2022 comprises five starts in the national Majors and two in the Regionals, with three podiums across those seven club-level entries.[2]
Against the regular competitors in Star Mazda, Smith typically finished ahead of semi-professional drivers with comparable experience and ahead of entry-level professionals with considerably more starts. He also beat Michael McDowell eight times in head-to-head competition; McDowell would go on to become the 2004 Star Mazda champion and later raced extensively in NASCAR's national series. Smith's wins and podium rate in his professional-level single-seater career place him among the capable performers in a competitive amateur-to-professional field rather than a dominant force within it.
