Steve Cook is a semi-professional who raced solo open-wheel cars in the Star Mazda Championship, a national single-class series that fields amateurs, semi-professionals and graded professionals in the same races. Cook competed for Northwest Autosport across five seasons from 2002 to 2007, with a spell driving for R-Sport in the latter part of his career.[1]

Cook made 34 starts in Star Mazda and finished 23rd in the championship standings in his final season of 2007. He typically finished behind entry-level professionals who were regular opponents in the series; Jon Brownson and John Faulkner, both competitors with significantly more experience in single-seaters and prototypes, usually outpaced him in head-to-head meetings. Cook's most notable finishes came against established professionals: he beat Michael McDowell, the 2004 Star Mazda champion who went on to race in NASCAR Cup and Xfinity, once in their meetings, and finished ahead of Jonathan Bomarito, a Platinum-graded driver who later competed in IMSA WeatherTech and the World Endurance Championship, in their single encounter.[2]
