He regularly raced against established professionals; he typically outpaced Stephen Simpson, a Silver-graded driver with 61 Pilot Challenge starts, and on occasion finished ahead of drivers such as Trenton Estep, a professional with experience across IMSA Pilot Challenge, Porsche Carrera Cup and GT World Challenge.[2]
The field included multiple graded professionals and established endurance competitors. Mason Filippi, another Silver-graded professional with 76 Pilot Challenge starts, usually finished ahead of McDonough in their meetings, placing him mid-pack in a grid of experienced shared-car racers.
