Tyson Sy was a semi-professional driver from the Philippines who competed in a single season of racing. His only series on record was the 2007 Star Mazda Championship, where he started six races for Team G.Fro without recording a podium finish. He classified on average in tenth position and ended the season fourteenth in the final standings, a respectable result given the strength of the field he faced.[1]
Sy's competition included Dane Cameron, who would go on to become an elite professional and multiple champion in top-tier sportscar racing; James Davison, a FIA Gold graded professional; and several other drivers competing at the professional and semi-professional level. Against this calibre of opposition, Sy managed isolated strong results, notably finishing ahead of Cameron once and taking three races over Davison despite losing their overall head-to-head matchup 3-3. These results against stronger drivers were exceptions rather than patterns in a brief career that saw him outpaced by the field more often than not.
Sy's rating of 3,872 places him at semi-professional level, the standing of drivers who compete competently in structured junior categories but do not sustain a career at the top tier. His single season in Star Mazda appears to have been the extent of his motorsport involvement, and he has since retired from racing.
