Aaron Ogus competed in the Star Mazda Championship in 2002, the single season on his racing record. He started nine rounds and finished outside the points-scoring positions in each, completing the season in 27th place overall with an average finishing position of 21st. This represents semi-professional racing: competitive at the entry level of paid motorsport but without the consistency or pace to establish himself among the front-runners. His Racer Rating of 3,454 places him in this semi-professional band, the level at which drivers win in pro-am and one-make classes but run mid-pack among full professionals.[1]

Ogus raced in a field that included Moses Smith, the 2002 Star Mazda champion, whom he finished ahead of once across their nine shared races but fell behind in eight. His head-to-head record against the full field proved heavily one-sided; he outfinished only John Olsen consistently, beating him on five occasions against four defeats. Against the stronger drivers in the field, notably Justin Pruskowski and John Mefford, he finished behind them in seven and eight of nine races respectively. Notable among his finishes were isolated results beating drivers of far higher calibre, including Scott Speed, a Platinum-graded driver and later Formula Renault Eurocup champion, and Michael McDowell, the 2004 Star Mazda champion, but these remained single-race achievements rather than established patterns.
