Andrea de Adamich was an Italian Formula 1 driver who raced across the 1968 to 1973 seasons. He made 31 starts in the championship, all for Brabham, without recording a win or podium finish. His average finishing position across classified races was ninth, placing him in a competitive but middling position within fields that included multiple world champions. De Adamich's primary rivals were drivers of substantial standing: he finished behind Jackie Stewart, a three-time champion, in all ten races they shared; behind François Cevert in seven of seven meetings; and behind Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time champion, in seven of eight encounters. Against stronger opposition he occasionally prevailed; he beat world champion Denny Hulme twice and three-time champion Niki Lauda twice, though these were isolated results within otherwise unfavourable records.[1]
De Adamich spent most of his Formula 1 career with Surtees, which accounted for thirteen of his starts. That team fielded a range of drivers but achieved no race victories during the periods he competed for it. His career traced the common path of a capable professional driver unable to secure the machinery or circumstances needed to deliver podium finishes at the championship's highest level; he raced at a time when the field was exceptionally deep and competitive opportunities for midfield runners were limited.[2]
