Carlos Javier Merlo is an entry-level professional who raced in a single-seater championship. His sole indexed season came in 2013, when he competed in the Formula Renault Eurocup for Manor MP Motorsport, a team that fielded Oliver Rowland and whose drivers won six races that year across its entries.[1]
Merlo made eight starts across the eight rounds of the 2013 Formula Renault Eurocup season and finished 24th in the championship standings. He raced in a field mixing amateurs, semi-professionals and graded professionals. He occasionally finished ahead of drivers who would later reach higher levels; he beat Oliver Rowland once, as well as Alexander Albon, an established professional who would go on to race Formula 1 extensively. More often, however, he finished behind both Rowland and Esteban Ocon, a regular opponent in the field who would become a Formula 1 driver and twice win championships before his debut in the sport.[2]
