David Velay is a retired French racing driver who competed as an established professional in single-seater and endurance racing. He raced in International Formula 3000, a single-class open-wheel championship, across 1989 to 1991, and spent six seasons in the FIA GT Championship from 1997 to 2002, driving shared endurance cars for teams including BBA Competition and Elf Haberthur Racing.[1]
Across his career Velay made eight championship starts. His sole indexed season in International Formula 3000 came in 1989 and 1991, while his longer spell in the FIA GT Championship ran from 1997 through 2002, culminating in a 36th-place championship standing in his final season in 2002.[2]
His record places him in a field that included graded professionals and Formula 1 veterans. He finished ahead of Damon Hill, a 1996 Formula 1 World Champion and 116-time grand prix starter, and Yannick Dalmas, a former Formula 1 driver with 24 grand prix starts. Against regular opponents, Velay typically finished ahead of Philippe Gache, an established professional and Bronze-graded driver with extensive International Formula 3000 and FIA GT experience, but usually behind Stéphane Gache, a Gold-graded professional who went on to 77 FIA GT Championship starts and raced in the World Touring Car Championship.
