🇵🇹 João Barbosa

João Barbosa is a professional endurance racing driver, FIA Platinum graded, who spent most of his career in the IMSA WeatherTech championship driving prototype machinery for Sean Creech Motorsport. Across DPi, LMP2 and LMP3 classes he started 78 times in IMSA competition from 2014 to 2024, winning eight races and taking 34 podiums. He also contested the FIA GT Championship early in his career and made two starts in the World Endurance Championship in 2015 and 2016.[1]

Barbosa's defining achievement was the 2014 IMSA WeatherTech championship with Action Express Racing, making him a professional-level competitor at a time when endurance racing at that scale regularly fielded drivers across the amateur to professional spectrum. His record in IMSA prototypes established him as a regular front-runner in a field that included multiple IMSA champions and WEC regulars. He raced wheel-to-wheel with Dane Cameron and Ricky Taylor, both FIA Platinum drivers who won multiple IMSA championships, and finished ahead of them as often as they finished ahead of him. On his strongest days he beat drivers of considerably higher standing; he finished ahead of Sébastien Buemi, a multiple WEC champion and former Formula 1 driver, twice across their meetings.[2]

Barbosa's career spanned 25 years from 1999 to his retirement in 2016, though his indexed record concentrates in the 2014–2024 period when he was a regular in IMSA's prototype classes. He remained competitive in a series that mixed amateur and professional drivers, holding his own against full-time professionals while racing part-time or driving shared cars, constraints that naturally shape an endurance driver's rating in a way that his measured pace against established names does not fully capture.
