José María López is an Argentine professional sportscar driver competing at the highest level of endurance racing. Rated among the upper half of active FIA Platinum-graded drivers, he has spent the bulk of his career in the FIA World Endurance Championship since 2017, where he has recorded 17 wins and 35 podiums across 63 starts for Akkodis ASP Team. His most prominent achievement came in the WEC with Toyota Gazoo Racing, where he won world championships in 2020 and 2021 and became the second Argentine driver to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans since 1954. He also holds the distinction of being a three-time World Touring Car Champion with Citroën between 2014 and 2016, reflecting a career that has moved successfully between different categories of professional racing.[1]
In the WEC, López has competed regularly against some of the sport's strongest drivers. His head-to-head record against Sébastien Buemi, a six-time champion, runs heavily in Buemi's favour at 20 finishes ahead against 40 behind across 60 shared races; similar gaps appear against other front-running professionals such as Brendon Hartley, a three-time champion, and André Lotterer, also a six-time champion. However, López has finished ahead of Neel Jani in a near-equal contest of 20 ahead to 16 behind across 36 races, and has consistently outfinished Adam Carroll, a Gold-graded professional, across 32 shared starts. He has also scored occasional results against drivers of Formula 1 pedigree, including finishes ahead of Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso, and Alex Palou, though these remain isolated instances rather than patterns of dominance.[2]
López's career has centred on endurance racing in recent years, with brief campaigns in Formula E and the European Le Mans Series yielding limited success. As of 2026, he remains an active competitor in the WEC with Akkodis ASP, recently called upon as a substitute drive for Toyota in September 2025 following an injury to a teammate, underscoring his continued status as a reliable professional within the sport's top tier.
