Justin Adakonis is an entry-level professional racing in a national solo sprint series; he competes in the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by Michelin for McCumbee McAleer Racing, driving a spec 2006-2015 Mazda MX-5. His rating of 3,778 places him in the professional band, marking a driver who has moved beyond amateur competition and is racing regularly against established professionals.[1]
Adakonis turned to road racing in 2024 after earlier kart racing. In his first SCCA season that year, he won three SCCA Majors races and took seven podiums across nine starts in the SMX class, also podiuming in both the SCCA Regionals and the SCCA Runoffs. He joined the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup in 2025 and has taken two wins and four podiums across 21 starts over the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Through six rounds of the 2026 season, he leads the championship with two wins and three podiums so far; more rounds remain to be contested.[2]
Against the regular professional opposition in the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup, Adakonis has a mixed record. He is closely matched with Helio Meza, an entry-level professional with experience in three series, but usually finishes behind Jeremy Fletcher, the 2025 ND2 class champion. Beyond his peers, he has finished ahead of established professionals including Earl Bamber, a Platinum-graded driver with 80 IMSA starts and a 2019 GTLM championship, twice; and Jesse Love, a two-time ARCA champion, once. His run to the current championship lead marks his strongest sustained performance at this level.
