Mike Thackwell is a retired New Zealand driver who competed in single-seater racing at the professional level, with a rating of 6,073 placing him among established professionals. He raced in Formula 1 for RAM in 1980–1984, making two starts without scoring points. His main career activity came in International Formula 3000, where he started 16 times for Ralt Racing between 1985 and 1988, winning four races and taking seven podiums. He also contested Formula 3 Macau in 1984–1985, finishing on the podium in all six of his starts.[1]

Thackwell's most competitive work came in International Formula 3000, where he won races outright and established himself among the category's front-runners. Across his five seasons of racing, he finished ahead of established professionals including Pierre-Henri Raphanel and Luis Perez-Sala on multiple occasions. In Formula 3 Macau, he competed in a mixed amateur and professional field and podiumed consistently. His Formula 1 tenure was brief; he became the seventh youngest driver to qualify for a Grand Prix when he made his debut at the Canadian Grand Prix in September 1980 and ultimately started two races without earning championship points.[2]

In International Formula 3000, Thackwell typically finished ahead of Emanuele Pirro, a driver who had also competed in Formula 1, though he was closely matched with John Nielsen, another established professional regular to the category. His record in these single-seater championships shows a driver competitive at professional level across three seasons of racing.
