Burstyn spent his indexed racing career in the Star Mazda Championship, a national series mixing amateur, semi-professional and graded professional drivers. He finished 21st in the final championship standings in 2010, his last season of competition. He beat established professional Conor Daly, the 2010 Star Mazda champion, on two occasions and professional Peter Dempsey once. Against regular opponent Rusty Mitchell, who would go on to race Indy NXT and IMSA WeatherTech, Burstyn was closely matched.[2]
Racing for Juncos Racing, a team that has produced established professional Rinus VeeKay among its 40 drivers, Burstyn typically finished behind Daly despite occasional head-to-head success against him. He remained mid-pack in a field that regularly included drivers bound for stronger categories.
