Anthony Downs holds a semi-professional rating of 3,475, the level of drivers who win in pro-am and one-make classes and run at the mid-pack among full professionals. His career on record spans two seasons of Star Mazda Championship racing in 2002 and 2003, across which he made six starts without recording a win or podium finish. He averaged a finishing position of P24.2 across his classified appearances.[1]
Downs raced consistently against established and rising professional drivers. Michael McDowell, who would become FIA Gold graded and win the 2004 Star Mazda Championship, finished ahead of Downs in all six of their shared races. Moses Smith and Luis Schiavo, both champions of the Star Mazda Championship in 2002 and 2003 respectively, held clean head-to-head records against him as well, with Schiavo the only one Downs managed to finish ahead of once across their six meetings. Among his peer group of semi-professionals, Downs showed more competitive form; he beat Mike Anderson twice and John Olsen twice in their encounters, though he remained behind Glenn Cooper and others across their shared races. He has since retired from racing.
