Enrico Bertaggia was an Italian racing driver who competed across three seasons between 1986 and 1988, racing exclusively in Formula 3 Macau for Forti Corse. His record consisted of five starts yielding one victory and two podium finishes, with an average finishing position of sixth place. The calibre of his competition was substantial; he raced against drivers who would go on to establish themselves at the highest levels of motorsport, including future Formula 1 champions and multiple drivers who reached elite professional status.[1]
Bertaggia's head-to-head record against his peers reflects a semi-professional competitor at the upper end of that band, ranking at 4,732 on the Elo scale. Against Michael Johansson, a professional-level driver, he finished ahead in all five shared races. More significantly, he defeated Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 world champion, in four of four races they contested together, and beat Jean Alesi, an elite professional who raced at the highest level, twice in their four meetings. He also recorded individual victories against Johnny Herbert and รric Bernard, both elite professional drivers. However, his record against drivers of comparable or higher standing shows consistent gaps; Jan Lammers, a strong professional, finished ahead more often than not, and he was outpaced by Gianni Morbidelli and รrik Comas, established professionals and graded drivers who beat him in every encounter.[2]
Bertaggia later moved into Formula 1, competing in eight Grands Prix across 1989 and 1992, though these races fall outside the database record supplied. He is now retired from professional motorsport.
