Stefano Modena was an established professional single-seater driver whose career spanned from 1986 to 1992. He raced in Formula 3 Macau, International Formula 3000, and Formula 1, competing most extensively in the top category from 1987 to 1992. He drove for Jordan early in his Formula 1 career and later for Brabham, which fielded him for 33 of his 73 Formula 1 starts.[1]

Modena won the 1987 International Formula 3000 championship with Onyx, taking three wins and four podiums across eleven rounds in his first season at that level. In Formula 1, he recorded two podium finishes across 73 starts and finished 14th in the championship standings in 1992, his final season in the series. His Formula 1 career proved competitive rather than dominant; he regularly finished ahead of established professionals including Maurício Gugelmin and Pierluigi Martini, both of whom were frequent opponents across multiple series.[2]

The pace to beat elite drivers occasionally came within reach. Modena finished ahead of Nelson Piquet, the 1987 Formula 1 champion, twice across their meetings, and ahead of two-time champion Mika Häkkinen five times. These victories were isolated instances rather than patterns; he remained broadly mid-field against the strongest drivers in the grids he entered. His career plateaued in Formula 1, where two podiums from 73 starts marked the ceiling of his performance in a series that demanded consistency he could not sustain across a full season.
