Aaro Vainio is a retired Finnish professional racing driver who competed in single-seater and endurance championships between 2010 and 2019. He raced primarily in Formula Renault Eurocup and GP3 Series for established teams including Tech 1 Racing and Koiranen GP, finishing his career in GT World Challenge Europe in 2019. Vainio held an FIA Silver grading, the intermediate classification in sportscar and endurance racing that sits below the full-professional Gold and Platinum grades.[1]
Vainio's career centred on open-wheel junior competition. In Formula Renault Eurocup in 2010 he took five podiums from 13 starts; he then moved to GP3 Series, where he spent three seasons from 2011 to 2013 and scored three wins and eight podiums across 41 starts. His strongest result came in single-seater racing, where he finished ahead of Mitch Evans, who went on to establish an elite professional career with 116 Formula E starts and 77 starts in GP2 Series, on nine occasions. He also beat Carlos Sainz multiple times in Formula V8 3.5, though Sainz would later become an elite professional with a Formula 1 career spanning 246 races. In 2012 Vainio took a single podium from five starts in Formula V8 3.5. His final campaign was in GT World Challenge Europe in 2019, where he took nine starts across the season and finished 25th in the championship standings.[2]
Vainio competed regularly alongside established professionals and graded drivers across his career. His most frequent rivals were Conor Daly and Giovanni Venturini, both FIA Gold graded professionals; he proved closely matched with each. In junior single-seater fields filled with semi-professionals and graded drivers alike, he operated as a front-running entrant without establishing a dominant record, a level his rating of 4,970 reflects as established professional.
