🇯🇵 Shinji Nakano

Shinji Nakano is an established professional who raced single-seaters and endurance cars across multiple championships between 1997 and 2018. He spent the bulk of his career in Formula 1, where he drove for Minardi across two seasons in 1997 and 1998, amassing 33 starts against fields that included elite professionals and graded drivers. He later competed in IndyCar, Super GT and the World Endurance Championship, racing LMP2 and LMGTE Am machinery for Manor across four seasons from 2012 to 2016.[1]

His single victory came in the WEC, where he took one win across seven starts. In Formula 1, Nakano was regularly outpaced by Mika Häkkinen, a two-time world champion, but held his own against Ralf Schumacher, a Gold-graded driver and established professional who was closely matched with him over multiple races. He finished ahead of Gerhard Berger, a 210-start Formula 1 veteran and established professional, at least once, and beat Kenta Yamashita, the 2024 Super GT GT500 champion, in their sole meeting during Nakano's Super GT campaign.[2]

Nakano's primary drive came through Prost, which fielded him for 17 of his 45 career starts; the team won no races across its history and fielded nine drivers, the strongest of them being established professional Jean Alesi. His record reflects a driver who competed competently among professionals across multiple series without establishing a sustained foothold in any of them.
