Michael Wainwright is a professional endurance racing driver competing in a multiclass field that mixes amateurs with graded professionals. He races GT3 cars in the European Le Mans Series and the FIA World Endurance Championship, and GTE cars in WEC's amateur class, all for GR Racing. He holds an FIA Bronze rating, the amateur grade in endurance racing.[1]
Wainwright has raced for eleven seasons across three major series, starting in WEC in 2016. He has taken four podiums in nine years of WEC starts across 51 races, where he has driven both LMGTE Am and LMGT3 machinery. His breakthrough came in the European Le Mans Series from 2024 onwards, where he has won once and taken six podiums in seventeen starts. His single win came in ELMS, and he currently sits 28th in WEC championship standings following one round in the 2024 season.[2]
His regular opponents in these fields are Christian Ried and Paul Dalla Lana, both multiple WEC LMGTE Am champions with far deeper records in the championship; Wainwright typically finishes behind them. He has finished ahead of established professionals including Matt Campbell, a three-time WEC LMGTE Am champion and 2025 IMSA GTP champion, on five occasions, and Kevin Estre, who won the 2024 WEC Hypercar title, once in their limited meetings.
