Waddell finished 19th in the 2003 Star Mazda Championship standings. His racing placed him among regular opponents at his own level; he was closely matched against John Olsen and John Faulkner, both entry-level professionals with considerably more experience in the series. He finished ahead of Ryan Justice, a professional with 44 Star Mazda starts, and beat the 2003 Star Mazda champion Luis Schiavo once across their meetings, though Schiavo substantially outpaced him across the season as a whole.[2]
