Art Cross was an American driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1952 and 1955, making four starts for Kurtis Kraft. His career yielded a single podium finish but no victories. He raced against strong contemporary drivers including Jim Rathmann, Duane Carter and Sam Hanks; Cross finished ahead of Rathmann once and beat Carter on one occasion despite Carter's higher overall rating. His average finishing position across classified starts was sixth.[1]
Cross competed in a field of professional drivers whose ratings ranged from the mid-4000s to above 5000, placing him in the upper half of that group. Against his most frequent rivals he produced a mixed record: he finished ahead of Chuck Stevenson and Manny Ayulo in all their shared races, but fell behind Duane Carter and Bill Vukovich more often than he beat them. His career spanned the early 1950s at a time when American drivers competed primarily in Formula 1 and the Indianapolis 500; his last recorded race was in 1955.
