Rob Nguyen was an established professional racing driver at a rating of 5,334, competing in International Formula 3000, a single-class, solo-driver championship that fields a mix of amateur, semi-professional, and graded professional drivers. He raced for Team Astromega, an outfit that also fielded Fernando Alonso and scored eight wins across the championship during the period Nguyen was active.[1]
Nguyen started his single-seater career in 2002 with only nine previous car races to his name and contested fifteen starts across the 2002 and 2003 seasons in F3000. He finished 15th in the 2003 championship standings across three rounds before his career ended due to lack of funding. His most regular opponents were Giorgio Pantano, a 2008 GP2 Series champion who later raced Formula 1, and Zsolt Baumgartner, who also went on to compete in Formula 1; Nguyen typically finished behind Pantano but was closely matched with Baumgartner. Among drivers who reached Formula 1, he beat Nicolas Kiesa five times and Gary Paffett, a Platinum-graded professional with a DTM background, once.[2]
