Eddie Cheever Jr. is a retired American driver who competed as an established professional in IndyCar, a national single-class championship. His 2006 season, comprising eight starts across the full campaign, placed him 20th in the final points standings. He raced primarily on ovals, with two starts on road and street courses.[1]
Cheever's record in 2006 put him mid-field in a grid mixing amateurs and semi-professionals with established competitors. He typically finished behind Dario Franchitti, a four-time series champion, and Scott Dixon, a six-time champion and FIA Platinum-graded driver, both regular opponents that season. He did finish ahead of Franchitti once and beat Dan Wheldon, the 2005 IndyCar champion, on one occasion.[2]
His drive in IndyCar came after a long career in American open-wheel racing that included a Formula One career from 1978 to 1989 and success in CART between 1986 and 1995. Cheever won the Indianapolis 500 in 1998 with his own team operation.
