🇧🇪 Eric van de Poele

Eric van de Poele is an established professional who raced in international single-seater and endurance championships across a fourteen-year career. Between 1989 and 2009 he competed in International Formula 3000, Formula 1 and the FIA GT Championship, driving for GA Motorsports in the junior open-wheel series and Vitaphone Racing Team in endurance racing. He holds an FIA Bronze grade, placing him among amateur and gentleman drivers in sportscar competition rather than the full professional tiers.[1]

His record spans three distinct series. In International Formula 3000 from 1989 to 1990, van de Poele took three wins and five podiums across 21 starts, racing for GA Motorsports in a field mixing amateurs with professionals and established competitors. He progressed to Formula 1 in 1991 and 1992, starting six times for Fondmetal and finishing 15th in the championship standings across his two seasons. From 1997 onwards he entered endurance racing, appearing in the FIA GT Championship across twelve starts where he secured three wins and four podiums for Vitaphone Racing Team.[2]

In the junior open-wheel ranks he matched established professionals regularly. Érik Comas, a two-time International Formula 3000 champion with 60 Formula 1 starts to his credit, was a frequent opponent in closely contested meetings. Paul Belmondo, who contested 45 International Formula 3000 races and seven Grands Prix, finished level with van de Poele across their encounters. Van de Poele finished ahead of Allan McNish and Jean Alesi, both of whom would go on to substantially longer Formula 1 careers; Alesi was the 1989 International Formula 3000 champion. In endurance racing he raced among amateurs and semi-professionals in a field that included cars shared by multiple drivers across multi-hour events.
