Sala made four starts in Formula 3 Macau in 1986 and 1987 against a mixed field of amateurs and professionals. He moved to International Formula 3000 for a single start with Madgwick Motorsport in 1988. A decade later, he returned to racing in the FIA GT Championship in 1997, sharing a car for two rounds with GT1 Lotus Racing and finishing 33rd in the season standings.[2]
The fields he raced in drew established professionals throughout. Sala was closely matched with Pierluigi Martini, who competed across Formula 1, International Formula 3000, and GT racing. He also raced regularly against Bernd Schneider, the 1997 FIA GT Championship champion and a much stronger driver. In single-seater competition, Sala finished ahead of Jean Alesi, the 1989 International Formula 3000 champion, and Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 world champion, in isolated meetings.
