He drove for McCormack Motorsports and Team Pelfrey between 1998 and 2000, making 21 starts across three seasons.[1]
Unser was named IRL rookie of the year in 1998, his first season, and finished second twice that year in a strong campaign. His best result in the Indianapolis 500 came in 1998 with a fifth-place finish. Over three seasons his career yielded two podium finishes. He finished 24th in the championship standings in his final season, 2000, and retired after that year with 21 IndyCar starts to his name.[2]
He raced regularly against established professionals including Scott Goodyear and Jeff Ward, drivers with 39 and 61 IndyCar starts respectively, and held his own in those meetings. Among stronger company, he finished ahead of Tony Stewart, the 1997 IndyCar champion, four times across their races together, and beat Eliseo Salazar, who had competed in Formula 1 and international open-wheel racing, seven times in the series. Team Pelfrey, which fielded him for ten of his starts, was an established operation that ran through 39 different drivers and won 30 races across its indexed history.
