Groff's IndyCar tenure spanned 1996 through 1998, finishing 21st in the championship standings in his final season. His career built on earlier success; he had won the 1989 Indy Lights championship before stepping up to the national series. During his time in IndyCar, he regularly raced against established professionals and occasionally bettered drivers of considerable pedigree, finishing ahead of 1997 IndyCar champion Tony Stewart six times and former Formula 1 driver Michele Alboreto in three meetings.[2]
