Guy Edwards was an established professional racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1974 and 1976, making twelve starts for the Hesketh team across two seasons. He raced in a championship that mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with graded professionals, competing solo in single-seater machinery across circuits in 34 countries.[1]
Edwards finished sixteenth in the 1976 Formula 1 championship standings after five rounds that season. His regular opponents in the series included Niki Lauda and Jody Scheckter, both of whom would go on to become multiple world champions; Edwards typically finished behind them. He beat established professional drivers including Ronnie Peterson twice and John Watson three times. Hesketh, the team he drove for in seven of his twelve starts, fielded a range of drivers and scored three race wins across its entire history, with Graham Hill among its strongest competitors.[2]
Edwards' most visible contribution to motorsport came outside the record books. In 1976, he helped rescue Niki Lauda from a burning Ferrari following a crash at the Nürburgring, an act for which he was later awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal.
