Troy Ruttman was an American single-seater racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1950 and 1960. His nine championship starts yielded one win and one additional podium finish, both recorded for the Watson team. His average finishing position across classified races was tenth. The record shows a competitive career spent racing against established front-runners of the era, including Jim Rathmann, Duane Carter, Tony Bettenhausen, and Jack McGrath, all drivers rated in the 4,900 to 5,075 range. In head-to-head encounters with these rivals, Ruttman showed an uneven record; he finished ahead of Rathmann twice in three shared races and ahead of Bettenhausen twice in three meetings, but fell behind each of the others more often than not.[1]
Ruttman came to Formula 1 with a strong background in American racing, having competed since age 15 and achieved considerable success in regional and AAA-sanctioned championships before his championship debut in 1950. His Formula 1 appearances were sporadic; he started only nine races across an eleven-year period. His sole win came in 1952, the year he also claimed victory at the Indianapolis 500 at age 22, an achievement that made him the youngest winner in that event's history. His final Formula 1 appearance came in 1960, when he finished 28th. Ruttman retired from competitive racing thereafter.[2]
