Frank Gardner was an Australian driver whose Formula 1 career spanned two seasons in 1964 and 1965, during which he started eight Grands Prix for Brabham-BRM without scoring championship points. His tenure coincided with the era of Clark, Hill, Stewart and Rindt; against these dominant champions and their peers, Gardner finished consistently in the lower order, never ahead of the three-time champions he encountered and classified on average in tenth place. His single-seater résumé included isolated competitive results against strong professional drivers such as Siffert, Bandini, McLaren and the 1970 World Champion Rindt, though these remained exceptions within a largely uncompetitive campaign in the sport's premier category.[1]
Gardner's brief and unsuccessful spell at Formula 1 level nonetheless marked one chapter in a considerably longer and more productive professional racing career. He became a notable figure in touring car racing, where he won multiple championships, and in sports car competition, whilst also competing regularly in the Tasman Series during the southern hemisphere winter. His racing spanned four decades and his legacy rested primarily on success outside Formula 1 rather than within it. He passed away in 2009.[2]
