Jerry Hoyt was an American racing driver from Chicago who competed in Formula 1 between 1950 and 1955, though his involvement in the sport's highest category remained marginal. He made four starts for the Stevens team across six seasons, finishing unclassified or deep in the field without securing a podium finish. His single Formula 1 appearance in 1955 resulted in a 26th-place finish.[1]
Hoyt's racing record shows that he was capable of outrunning drivers of considerably higher standing in isolated instances. He finished ahead of Jim Rathmann, Sam Hanks, Tony Bettenhausen and Jimmy Davies, all drivers with Racer Ratings in the 4,900 to 5,100 range, well above his own rating of 4,144, at least once each during his career. Most of his Formula 1 machinery came from Kurtis Kraft, a constructor that won races and fielded stronger drivers including Rathmann himself. On average across all his classified starts, Hoyt finished 14th.[2]
His professional racing career came to an abrupt end in 1955 when he was fatally injured in a sprint car accident at Oklahoma City on 11 July of that year.
