🇫🇷 Yann Clairay

Yann Clairay is an established professional, FIA Silver-graded, who raced single-seaters and prototypes across eight seasons from 2003 to 2021. He spent the bulk of his indexed career in junior formula, competing primarily for SG Formula in the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula 3 Euro Series, and returned to racing in 2018 and 2021 in American prototype endurance competition.[1]

In Formula Renault Eurocup, Clairay took four wins and eleven podiums across 23 starts, establishing himself among the front runners of that grid. His Formula 3 Euro Series campaign yielded three podiums from 36 starts, a markedly quieter record against a stronger field that included multiple drivers who went on to elite professional careers. He encountered Nico Hülkenberg, the 2008 Formula 3 Euro Series champion and later a Formula 1 driver, multiple times over his junior formula years; he finished ahead of Hülkenberg nine times. His late career moves to American racing came thirteen years after his junior formula peak. He made two starts in IMSA WeatherTech in 2021 and finished 16th in the championship standings, taking one podium, and earlier appeared in IMSA Prototype Challenge and the FIA GT Championship with one start each.[2]

The Formula Renault Eurocup grid mixed amateurs and professionals, and Clairay's four wins there place him in the middle tier of that field; he regularly beat Dani Clos, an established professional with substantial experience in GP2 Series and Formula 3 Euro Series, and was closely matched with Franck Mailleux, a Gold-graded professional who went on to race in the World Endurance Championship. His record against Hülkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo, both elite professionals who raced Formula 1, amounted to isolated results in a field where those drivers were far stronger overall; Ricciardo alone appeared 16 times in Formula Renault Eurocup to Clairay's 23 starts, and took the series title in his sole season there.
