Peter Gethin was an established professional racing driver who competed in Formula 1 from 1970 to 1974, recording 30 starts across five seasons for BRM and other entrants. His sole victory came in the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, one of the closest finishes in the championship's history, and he secured a points finish in 1974 to complete his indexed career.[1]

His record placed him among the mid-field regulars of the era. Gethin finished ahead of François Cevert on two occasions and once beat Niki Lauda, the three-time world champion, though he more often found himself behind Cevert in their head-to-head meetings. Graham Hill, a two-time champion with 177 Formula 1 starts to Gethin's 30, proved closely matched with him across their races together. His single podium came from a field that ranged from semi-professional and amateur competitors to graded professionals, the span typical of Formula 1 grids in the early 1970s.[2]
