Alex Yoong is a retired Malaysian racing driver with a Racer Rating of 6,751, placing him at the elite professional level; this is the standing of a driver who competes at the very top of motorsport and regularly finishes ahead of established professionals. He held the FIA Gold grading in sportscar and endurance racing, denoting full professional status within that discipline. His racing career spanned five seasons from 1998 to 2002 across 22 starts, all in single-seater categories; he competed in Formula 3 Macau and, most prominently, Formula 1, where he started 15 Grands Prix for Minardi between 2001 and 2002 without securing a win or podium finish.[1]

Yoong's Formula 1 tenure placed him against some of the strongest drivers of the era. He shared races with seven-time champion Michael Schumacher, finishing behind him in all six encounters, and with David Coulthard and Jenson Button, both drivers of significantly higher rating. Against Button, Yoong recorded one finish ahead in eight shared races; against Darren Manning, a professional-level competitor, he failed to finish ahead across six races. His average finishing position across all classified starts was P11.2, a consistent mid-field performer in strong grids. Notably, he did record individual results against higher-rated drivers such as Allan McNish, Luciano Burti, and Pedro de la Rosa, though these remain isolated instances rather than sustained head-to-head patterns. As the sole Malaysian driver to compete in Formula 1, Yoong has remained engaged with motorsport post-retirement, taking a coaching role with Malaysia's national e-racing programme.[2]
