🇺🇸 Steve Knapp

Steve Knapp was an established professional racing in IndyCar, a single-class national championship contested on oval tracks. He drove for Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and ISM Racing across three seasons from 1998 to 2000, taking 13 starts in the series.[1]

Knapp scored his sole podium finish in his debut at the 1998 Indianapolis 500, where he finished third and earned Rookie of the Year honours. He remained competitive across his three seasons, regularly racing against established professionals Scott Goodyear and Raul Boesel, both of whom had significantly longer careers in IndyCar. He finished ahead of 1997 IndyCar champion Tony Stewart on three occasions and beat former Formula 1 driver Eliseo Salazar twice, though he never led a lap across his 13 starts. His final season in 2000 saw him place 24th in the championship standings.[2]

The IndyCar field of that era mixed amateur and semi-professional entrants with graded professionals. Knapp ran competitively within it as a peer to drivers of his own standing, with his standout result coming immediately upon entry to the series.
