Hunter McElrea is an established professional racing in American single-seater and prototype racing. He competes in IMSA WeatherTech in the LMP2 class for United Autosports USA, driving LMP2 prototypes in a multiclass endurance format where he shares the car with co-drivers. Before moving to endurance racing, he spent two seasons in Indy NXT and two in the Indy Pro 2000 Championship, both solo sprint series fielding a mix of amateur and professional drivers. McElrea holds an FIA Silver grading, the second tier below full-professional status in endurance racing.[1]

Across seven seasons from 2020 through 2024, McElrea has accumulated 12 wins and 32 podiums from 78 starts. He began his indexed career in Indy Pro 2000 in 2020 with Pabst Racing, taking 4 wins and 13 podiums across two seasons. He then moved to Indy NXT for 2022 and 2023 with Andretti Autosport, where he won 3 times and recorded 12 podiums. Since 2024 he has raced in IMSA WeatherTech for United Autosports USA, where he has taken 5 wins from 16 starts and adds 7 podiums. He made one IndyCar appearance in 2024 and currently holds reserve driver status with Ed Carpenter Racing.[2]

His strongest running comes in endurance racing, where his wins pace him ahead of his single-seater record. In IMSA he has finished ahead of established professionals including Kakunoshin Ohta, a Super Formula driver with 39 starts at that level, and once beat António Félix da Costa, the 2019 Formula E champion and 2022 WEC LMP2 champion. In the ladder of American single-seaters he competed closely with established professionals Jacob Abel and Christian Rasmussen, the 2021 Indy Pro 2000 and 2023 Indy NXT champion; McElrea ran evenly with both across multiple seasons in each series.
