Lance Macklin was a British racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1952 and 1955, accumulating thirteen starts for Maserati without securing a podium finish. His career coincided with the early years of the world championship, a period dominated by established professionals and former champions. Across his four seasons, Macklin finished on average in tenth place; while he never matched the pace of the front-running drivers of that era, he demonstrated sufficient capability to occasionally out-qualify and finish ahead of drivers of professional standing, notably Harry Schell in two instances and Toulo de Graffenried on one occasion.[1]
Macklin spent most of his formula 1 career with HWM, a British constructor that fielded him in twelve of his thirteen starts. The team itself never recorded a race victory during its entire operational history, and Macklin's tenure reflected the competitive limitations of the machinery available to him. His most notable rivals in the championship included Nino Farina, Mike Hawthorn, and Alberto Ascari, all drivers of significantly higher calibre; against this group, Macklin remained consistently outpaced, failing to finish ahead of any of them across their shared races. His last appearance in formula 1 came in 1955, finishing 26th in a single round.[2]
