The World Touring Car Championship was an international sprint touring car championship that ran between 2005 and 2017, after which it was renamed and reconstituted as the FIA World Touring Car Cup. The field spans established professionals drawn chiefly from single-seater racing and GT championships, with drivers such as Thed Bjork, Esteban Guerrieri and Yann Ehrlacher among its strongest competitors. The median driver rating places the grid at professional entry level, comparable in strength to the successor World Touring Car Cup but slightly weaker overall. Drivers arrive most often from Formula 3 Macau and International Formula 3000, and those progressing onward move most commonly to the World Touring Car Cup or to endurance racing.
