The World Touring Car Championship was an international touring car championship promoted by Eurosport Events and sanctioned by the FIA, running as a world championship between 2005 and 2017 before being renamed to the World Touring Car Cup and continuing under that name. It is a sprint series for touring cars, fielding drivers who range from established professionals to amateurs, with a median rating in the professional range. The field is weaker than its direct peers at the very top such as Formula 3 Macau and International Formula 3000, but comparable to the World Touring Car Cup itself; it sits above the endurance and longer-format series that its drivers move into, such as the 24H Series.
