International Formula 3000 was a single-seater sprint championship created in 1985 as a final preparatory step toward Formula One. The series ran open specification racing initially before moving to standardized tyres, engines and chassis; it continued annually until 2004 and was then discontinued and replaced by the GP2 Series. The field held established professionals and promising juniors, with top drivers including Giorgio Pantano, Nicolas Kiesa and Gary Paffett. Drivers commonly arrived from Formula 3 Macau and moved on to both Formula One and sportscar racing in the FIA GT Championship and WEC. The series was stronger than the FIA GT Championship and comparable to WEC in driver calibre.
