International Formula 3000 was a single-seater championship created in 1985 to serve as the final step toward Formula 1. It ran as a sprint series with open specification before progressively standardizing its machinery; engines and chassis became uniform from 1996 onwards. The series operated until 2004 and has been discontinued. Its field drew heavily from Formula 3 Macau and occasionally from Formula 1, and drivers moved on primarily to sports-car racing in the FIA GT Championship and World Endurance Championship. The strength of its grid sits between established professional and elite professional levels, comparable to the FIA GT Championship but notably weaker than Formula 3 Macau and Formula 1. Top drivers included Giorgio Pantano, Nicolas Kiesa, and Gary Paffett.
