International Formula 3000 was created in 1985 as the primary feeder series for Formula One, holding that role until its discontinuation in 2004. It fielded open-specification single-seaters that evolved toward a more standardized format over its life. The field that contested it was established professional, comparable in strength to the WEC and stronger than the contemporary FIA GT Championship; several of its drivers, including Giorgio Pantano and Gary Paffett, reached elite or generational standing. The series functioned as a genuine stepping stone, with drivers arriving regularly from Formula 3 competition and advancing to Formula One, though many also moved into sportscar and endurance racing. It stood between the lower-tier single-seater championships and the peak of motorsport, and was replaced by the GP2 Series in 2005.
