GP2 Series was introduced in 2005 as the successor to Formula 3000 and was rebranded as the FIA Formula 2 Championship in 2017, under which name it continues today. It is a single-class sprint championship for open-wheel racing cars, fielding established professional drivers with a minority of younger professionals. The field is stronger than the lower-tier open-wheel feeder series it draws from, including Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula 3 Euro Series, though comparable to Formula 3 Macau and slightly stronger than the sportscar grids that supply it, namely WEC and IMSA WeatherTech. Pierre Gasly and Oliver Rowland represent the calibre at the top.
