GP2 Series is an open-wheel sprint championship that was renamed to the FIA Formula 2 Championship and continues today. It was introduced in 2005 as the successor to Formula 3000. The series fields established professionals, with a field comparable to Formula 3 Macau but notably stronger than its main feeder series; drivers including Pierre Gasly, Oliver Rowland and Mitch Evans race at its front. The championship functions as a critical stepping stone between junior single-seaters and the next level, drawing from Formula 3 and similar feeders and propelling its graduates toward Formula 1, Formula E, and prototype and GT racing. A majority of the roster holds FIA professional grades from sportscar racing.
