Eugenio Castellotti was an Italian Formula 1 driver who competed for Ferrari across three seasons between 1955 and 1957, accumulating 14 starts, three podium finishes, and no victories. His record places him in the middle tier of a competitive professional grid populated by multiple world champions. Castellotti typically finished fifth on average across his classified starts, competing regularly against front-line drivers including Juan Fangio, the five-time world champion, and Stirling Moss. Against Fangio he was outpaced overall, finishing behind him six times against a single victory; against Moss the record was closer at two wins from six encounters. Castellotti recorded victories over Mike Hawthorn, the 1957 world champion, on three separate occasions, and over Jean Behra on four races from their six meetings.[1]
Beyond Formula 1, Castellotti achieved significant success in sportscar racing, winning both the 1956 Mille Miglia and the 12 Hours of Sebring that same year driving for Ferrari. His career was spent almost entirely with the Scuderia, which fielded him in 11 of his 14 Grand Prix starts. His Formula 1 tenure ended in 1957 after a single race in which he finished outside the points, and he subsequently retired from racing.[2]
