Sam Tingle was a Rhodesian racing driver who competed in Formula 1 between 1962 and 1969, accumulating six starts for Brabham-Repco without securing a podium finish. His career spanned the early 1960s single-seater era, a period when opportunities for drivers from southern Africa to reach the top category were limited and competitive seats scarce. Across his six Grand Prix appearances, Tingle finished on average in tenth position when classified, a respectable baseline given the strength of the Formula 1 grid of that era.[1]
Tingle's most notable result came against Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini, a professional of considerably higher standing whom he outfinished once during his career. He also defeated David Prophet in a single race. Two of his six starts came with the LDS team, which never won a Grand Prix and fielded only two drivers across its entire history, making Tingle the strongest driver the team ever fielded. His last Grand Prix appearance came in 1969, finishing nineteenth, after which he retired from racing.[2]
